Blackhawk, Colorado along with Central City & Cripple Creek, Colorado legalized gambling in 1991. While Black hawk is famous for their exciting gambling saloons & newer vegas style and "themed" casinos now, the town is quite rich in history, too. Black Hawk was once a booming gold mining town in Colorado and Central City is only one mile from Black Hawk, walking distance, just up the hill. There are shuttles that run between the towns also.
Black Hawk has two distinct section of town, old downtown which has more of the entact historical buildings & feel to is, and the new Black Hawk.
Black Hawk, Colorado is a different town if you have not been there in the last 4 years. When you come up from Denver you are now greeted with huge casinos:
The Riviera Casino is the first you'll notice followed closely by the Isle of Capri & Colorado Central Station. The Isle of Capri has a hotel. The Lodge casino also has a nice hotel attached and will be the next casino you see on your left. To the right of the Lodge (North side of Hwy 119) is the Richman Casino and the all new Mountain High Casino, formerly the Black Hawk Casino.
The Casions in Blackhawk Colorado are extraordinary! Where you thought they couldn't fit anything else the bigshots have moved mountains and installed some of the most fantastic casinos in Colorado.
Colorado Gaming has grown a lot in the last 12 years. The Colorado Division of Gaming has more than one office, there are nearly 40 casinos in the state of Colorado. Two indian casinos and gambling places.

All three gaming towns are located in National Historic districts. Most would probably agree that Black Hawk has strayed the furthest from the preservation guidelines. Casinos have taken over! Mountains have been literally blown away and replaced with casinos! (Black Hawk Colorado History)
We might point out that if you visit Black Hawk, leave your children at home. Blackhawk is not a friendly place to people under the age of 21. If you want to take your children, or have no choice, we recommend Central City or Cripple Creek. Blackhawk can really party! But beware, they have a police force that strictly enforces Colorado DUI laws.

Other than that come ready to gamble. Gambling is everywhere - and Black Hawk Casinos are just fabulous! There are two "main" sections of town with a few casinos on the outskirts. "New Black Hawk" is located at the South end of town as you're arriving if coming from Denver or Golden on Hwy 119. We call it "new" because this is where the bulk of the larger casinos are located. The Riviera and the Isle of Capri Casino & Hotel are among the first you'll run into. Followed by Colorado Central Station, The Lodge Casino, Black Hawk Casino by Hyatt & the Mardi Gras Casino (wow!!!)
Continue up Highway 119 to old town Black Hawk, and you'll see plenty of historic houses and buildings. Most of the buildings are restored and have limited stakes gambling inside! Bullwhackers, Bullpen Casino, Black Hawk Station, Wild Card, Fitzgeralds, Gilpin Hotel & Casino, Canyon and Bull Durham can be found in this area... as you head up Gregory Street to Central City you will also pass Eureka & the Red Dolly Casino.
