History Of Cripple Creek

Cripple Creek is the home of Colorado’s last gold rush. Gold was not discovered in the town until 1890, but in 1891 the town’s Independence mine became one of the largest gold strikes in history. The gold boom brought thousands of prospectors to the area. When the gold rush ended, Cripple Creek became a ghost town.

The town remained small and sleepy until casinos emerged after gambling became legal in Colorado. In 1990, the town had only 600 residents. After gambling became legal in 1991, the town began to refurbish older buildings for use as casinos. And, in 1995 gold was found again. Cripple Creek now produces over 250,000 ounces a gold each year, making it the largest existing mining operation in the US.
